TLDR Sheep wool keratin solution safely and effectively promotes hair growth.
The study investigated the effects of a keratin solution extracted from sheep wool on hair growth. The keratin was obtained through sulfitolysis and formulated into a 0.1% weight/volume solution. Applied topically to 4 telogenic mice, the solution significantly reduced the time for hair growth initiation and completion compared to a control group, with the treated mice's hair being hard, long, thick, and healthy. The solution was found to be a Newtonian fluid with good physical stability and a suitable pH for hair, and it did not cause skin irritation in albino rats. The study concluded that wool-derived keratin extract is a safe and effective topical agent for stimulating hair growth and could be a promising treatment for hair follicle disorders, though further research is needed for additional characterization.

Keratin microspheres may offer additional mechanisms to combat hair loss compared to minoxidil. The process to create these microspheres is relatively simple and can be done at home with basic equipment.

Minoxidil with alcohol and propylene glycol was more effective than non-alcohol versions, and RU58841 worked best in a non-water-based solution. Oral finasteride showed better results than topical, despite side effects; microneedling and tretinoin worsened hair loss, and PRP was only helpful when younger.

Hair loss treatments discussed include minoxidil, finasteride, and RU58841. Salon products and supplements generally don't work for hair regrowth unless there's a severe nutritional deficiency, while hormonal treatments like estrogen and spironolactone can be effective.

A gel of keratin microspheres promotes hair follicle growth, showing similar effectiveness to minoxidil in mice. The treatment activates hair growth pathways and reduces inflammation, with potential applications in drug delivery for hair-related disorders.
