TLDR Finasteride exposure harms tadpole reproduction and hormone balance.
Exposure of Xenopus laevis tadpoles to finasteride, an inhibitor of 5-α reductase activity, impairs spermatogenesis and alters hypophyseal feedback mechanisms. The study found that exposure to finasteride led to a decrease in testicular size and sperm count, as well as changes in the levels of hormones involved in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. These findings suggest that finasteride may have negative effects on reproductive function in amphibians.
