TLDR Alopecia areata greatly affects quality of life, with many experiencing mental health issues and lacking professional support.
This study surveyed 226 individuals in Finland with alopecia areata (AA) and found that the condition significantly impacts quality of life, with 82.7% having at least one comorbid condition such as atopic dermatitis or allergic rhinitis. Depression and anxiety were also common, affecting 22.1% and 23.0% of respondents, respectively. Those with ≥50% hair loss reported lower overall well-being and more negative effects on relationships and social situations. Despite these challenges, 82.7% had not received treatment for AA in the past year, relying instead on social media and peer support for information. The study underscores the need for better patient education and professional support, urging healthcare providers to offer guidance on treatment options and assess comorbidities to enhance well-being.
