TLDR Elderly patients frequently suffer from skin conditions, especially inflammatory ones, highlighting the need for better healthcare.
This five-year review of 8,268 elderly patients at the University of Santo Tomas Hospital in Manila found that 16.76% of dermatology consultations were for elderly patients, with a higher proportion of females (63.15%). The most common conditions were xerosis/xerotic eczema (10.02%), irritant contact dermatitis (7.00%), and lichen simplex chronicus (6.67%). Inflammatory conditions were the most prevalent (53.90%), followed by infectious diseases (24.19%) and neoplasms (12.09%). The study underscores the significant impact of dermatologic disorders on the elderly and the need for targeted healthcare interventions to improve their quality of life.
