The study compares the endocrine and metabolic profiles of obese and lean women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) who experience infertility. It highlights that PCOS is a prevalent endocrine disorder affecting 6-10% of reproductive-aged women and is a leading cause of infertility, with 30% of infertile women having PCOS. The study categorizes women into two groups based on BMI: lean (BMI <23 kg/m²) and obese (BMI ≥23 kg/m²). It finds that while PCOS is often associated with obesity, a lean phenotype also exists, and these groups exhibit different phenotypic, metabolic, and endocrine characteristics. Obese women with PCOS are more likely to experience insulin resistance, acne, and hirsutism, whereas lean women with PCOS display distinct characteristics. Understanding these differences is crucial for developing tailored management strategies for each subgroup.
