TLDR Electrophoresis can effectively analyze hair proteins for forensic use, even after cosmetic treatments and up to 2 years of weathering.
The study demonstrated that 15% polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis could effectively analyze human hair-carboxymethylated protein for forensic purposes, as usual cosmetic treatments and weathering up to 2 years did not significantly alter electrophoretic patterns. However, weathering beyond 2.5 years complicated pattern determination. Capillary gel disc electrophoresis of a single 5 cm hair strand, even after ABO blood group testing, provided a comprehensive protein pattern analysis, which was successfully applied in a forensic case.
