TLDR The new nanofiber improves wound healing by releasing growth factors, reducing inflammation, and helping skin regeneration.
The study presents the creation of a core-shell nanofiber scaffold, P-GQT-D, designed to promote skin wound repair. The scaffold was created using coaxial electrospinning and mussel-inspired chemistry, encapsulating epidermal growth factor (EGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) within the fibers. The P-GQT-D fiber demonstrated excellent antibacterial capability, hydrophilicity, thermal property, and suitable mechanical strength. It also showed a sustained release of the dual growth factors. In a mouse full-thickness skin defect model, the P-GQT-D nanofiber reduced the release of inflammatory cytokines, accelerated collagen deposition, and the regeneration of hair follicles and blood vessels, enhancing wound repair. This suggests its potential for clinical application in skin tissue engineering.
