TLDR Triamcinolone is more effective for hair regrowth in alopecia areata, but Vitamin D also helps, especially if levels are low.
This study compared the efficacy of Vitamin D replacement therapy and intralesional triamcinolone in treating alopecia areata in 56 patients over 12 months. Patients were divided into two groups of 28, with one group receiving Vitamin D and the other receiving triamcinolone. Results showed that the triamcinolone group had significantly higher hair density and percentage increase in hair density at 6 and 12 months compared to the Vitamin D group. However, Vitamin D also showed potential for hair regrowth, particularly in patients with deficient serum vitamin D levels. The study concluded that intralesional triamcinolone is more effective than Vitamin D, but Vitamin D still offers significant improvement.
