TLDR Soy supplements improve various skin conditions and aging signs, with topical use boosting skin barrier function.
The systematic review titled "Clinical Efficacy of Topical or Oral Soy Supplementation in Dermatology" analyzed 30 studies, 13 of which assessed oral soy supplementation and 17 assessed topical soy supplementation. The studies found that soy supplementation, both oral and topical, showed significant improvements in various skin conditions such as wrinkles, skin laxity, sagging, hyperpigmentation, and acne vulgaris. Additionally, a study involving 40 women showed significant improvement in hair and nail parameters after daily soy supplementation. However, the review emphasized the need for more rigorous and larger-scale clinical trials to further validate these findings and establish the optimal dosage and formulation of soy-based products for dermatological use.
