TLDR Oral Apremilast effectively treats alopecia areata in most patients.
The study conducted at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre in Karachi assessed the efficacy of oral Apremilast in treating alopecia areata (AA) in 85 patients. Administered at 30 mg twice daily, Apremilast significantly reduced the Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) scores from 62.42 to 41.53 over 12 weeks, with a mean difference of 20.89 (p-value: 0.0001). The treatment was effective in 80% of patients, suggesting that oral Apremilast could be a promising alternative for AA treatment, warranting further clinical investigation.

Oral minoxidil is considered more effective for hair regrowth than topical minoxidil, but it carries higher risks. Combining microneedling with topical minoxidil can enhance absorption, but oral minoxidil with microneedling shows significant results.
