Efficacy and Safety of Oral Alitretinoin in Chronic Hand Eczema and Palmoplantar Pustulosis

    Image of study
TLDR Oral alitretinoin is effective for certain types of chronic hand eczema, with mild side effects.
The document reports on the efficacy and safety of oral alitretinoin in treating chronic hand dermatitis, including chronic hand eczema (CHE) and palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP). The retrospective study included 46 patients and found that alitretinoin was more effective in treating hyperkeratotic and fingertip subtypes of hand dermatitis than the vesicular subtype. There was no significant difference in efficacy between CHE and PPP, although PPP patients required a longer duration and higher dose of alitretinoin, with a longer latency period before effects were observed. The most common side effects were flushing (10.9%) and headache (8.7%), with no serious side effects reported. The study concluded that the efficacy of alitretinoin is better predicted by the morphology of the dermatitis rather than the etiology.
