TLDR Intralesional corticosteroid injections effectively treat scalp vitiligo.
Intralesional betamethasone injections were evaluated for treating scalp vitiligo in a retrospective study of 10 patients, most of whom were treatment-resistant. The treatment involved three sessions of betamethasone injections, followed by 3- and 12-month follow-ups. Six patients showed significant repigmentation (>50%) at 3 months, with four achieving >90% repigmentation. Patients without leukotrichia had higher repigmentation rates, while those with leukotrichia had poorer outcomes. The study concluded that intralesional corticosteroid injections are an effective and low-cost treatment for scalp vitiligo, despite minor adverse effects like reversible skin atrophy and injection pain. Further prospective, randomized studies are recommended.
