TLDR Taking 2.5mg of finasteride daily can effectively improve hair loss in 62% of women, especially those pre-menopause or with less severe hair loss.
The study examined the clinical efficacy of oral administration of finasteride at a dose of 2.5mg/day in women with female pattern hair loss. The study involved 137 women aged between 40-70 years, with a mean age of 49.5±6.9 years. The results showed that the treatment was effective in 85 women (62%) of the participants. The study also found that finasteride had a better effect on hair growth in patients with a lower Ludwig score. The duration of female pattern hair loss, menopause status, and baseline Ludwig scale were also considered in the study. The treatment was particularly effective in premenopausal women and those with a lower Ludwig scale.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

Diffuse thinning is worse than a receding hairline as it affects the entire scalp, complicating styling and hair transplants. Treatments like finasteride, minoxidil, dutasteride, and RU58841 are mentioned, with some users noting improved hair density.
