TLDR PRP treatment can safely improve short-term vision in acute NAION patients.
This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for treating acute nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) in 25 patients. The PRP group (12 patients) received two tenon capsule injections of PRP, while the control group (13 patients) received standard treatment. Results showed that the PRP group had a significant improvement in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and capillary perfusion density (CPD) at 30 days post-treatment. The main adverse effect was local discomfort, which resolved within a week. Overall, PRP was found to be a safe treatment that could enhance capillary perfusion and potentially improve short-term vision in acute NAION patients.
