Effects of the Usage of L-Cysteine on Human Health

Noelia Clemente Plaza, Manuel Reig García-Galbis, Rosa María Martínez‐Espinosa
TLDR L-Cysteine may have health benefits, but its effectiveness is still debated due to limited clinical trial data.
The document reviewed the effects of l-Cysteine (l-Cys) and its derivative N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on human health, emphasizing their roles in redox regulation, glutathione synthesis, and as antioxidants. l-Cys was beneficial in conditions like severe malnutrition, diabetes, and oxidative stress, and showed promise in enhancing corneal wound healing and immune function post-exercise. NAC demonstrated potential benefits in liver recovery, renal function improvement, and prevention of noise-induced hearing loss, as well as in treating cocaine addiction and alleviating depressive symptoms. However, some studies showed no significant improvement in patient outcomes, indicating the need for further research to fully understand and optimize their clinical use.
