Experimental Study on the Effects of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma Extract on Hair Growth in C57BL/6J Mice
January 2013
TLDR Ginseng extract promoted hair growth in mice and improved local blood flow.
In the 2013 study, the effects of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma extract on hair growth were examined in C57BL/6J mice across three dosage groups (high dose at 2 g/mL, medium dose at 1 g/mL, and low dose at 0.5 g/mL), a positive control group using zhangguang 101, and a blank control group. The results showed that all dosage groups promoted hair growth in a dose-dependent manner, without affecting the final hair length, and were comparable to the positive control. Histological examination revealed that the extract induced the transition of hair follicles from the resting phase to the growth phase and increased melanin production. Additionally, the extract significantly raised skin temperature shortly after administration and inhibited platelet aggregation in a concentration-dependent manner, suggesting improved local microcirculation. The study concluded that the hair growth effects of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma extract might be due to the expansion of skin capillaries and enhanced microcirculatory perfusion.
