Study on the Effects of Fluorine and Selenium on Human Hair Follicles In Vitro

    Lifeng Liu
TLDR High levels of sodium fluoride harm hair growth, but sodium selenite can reduce this harm.
The study investigated the effects of fluorine and selenium on human hair follicles in vitro. It found that sodium fluoride at concentrations of 1mmol/L and 10mmol/L inhibited hair follicle growth, while 0.1mmol/L had no effect. Sodium selenite at 0.01mmol/L reduced the toxicity of 1mmol/L sodium fluoride. Electron microscopy revealed extensive apoptosis in hair follicles exposed to 10mmol/L sodium fluoride, with similar damage observed when combined with sodium selenite. The study concluded that sodium fluoride's impact on hair follicle growth varied with concentration, and sodium selenite could mitigate its toxicity.
