TLDR Green tea's EGCG has various health benefits, including antioxidant properties, skin protection, cancer cell growth inhibition, anti-inflammatory effects, fat breakdown, detoxification, diabetes management, hair growth stimulation, and prevention of gum disease.
The document from 8 years ago, titled "Review of Effectiveness of Green Tea Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) on the Inside and Outside of Human Body", discussed the various bioactive features of EGCG, a major constituent of catechins in green tea. The unique phenolic structure of EGCG, particularly the number of hydroxyl, was found to be largely involved in its antioxidant activity. The study highlighted that EGCG reduces the manifestation of matrix metalloproteinases, restrains the activation of certain kinases activated by UVB on mouse skin, and inhibits the activation of tyrosinase by UV rays. It also restrains the growth of cancer cells by affecting G1 regulatory enzyme of the cell cycle. Furthermore, EGCG was found to not only restrain the proliferation of P. acnes but also reduce the manifestation and production of certain cytokines related to inflammation. Additional benefits of EGCG included breaking down body fat, detoxification of heavy metals, antidiabetic effects, stimulating hair growth, and preventing periodontitis.
