TLDR Low androgen levels reduce nitric oxide production in rat penile cells.
The study investigated the impact of androgen on extracellular vesicles (EVs) and nitric oxide (NO) production in endothelial cells from rat penile corpus cavernosum. Endothelial cells from 6-week-old male Sprague Dawley rats were treated with varying concentrations of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Results showed that lower androgen levels led to a decrease in EVs and NO production, with the no-androgen group exhibiting significantly lower concentrations compared to groups with higher DHT levels. The study concluded that a decrease in eNOS-expressing EVs was a mechanism for reduced NO in endothelial cells due to low androgen levels.
