TLDR Cinnamomum osmophloeum leaf extract may help treat hair loss by promoting hair growth and increasing hair cell proliferation.
In the 2018 study, researchers investigated the effects of Cinnamomum osmophloeum Kanehira (COK) leaf aqueous extract on hair growth through both in vitro and in vivo experiments. They discovered that the extract significantly increased the proliferation of rat vibrissae and human hair dermal papilla cells (hDPCs) in vitro. Additionally, the extract raised the mRNA levels of hair growth-related factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor, keratinocyte growth factor, and transforming growth factor-β2 in cultured hDPCs. In vivo, the COK leaf extract stimulated hair growth in a hair-depilated C57BL/6 mouse model, promoting the anagen phase of the hair growth cycle as evidenced by photographic and histological analyses. The extract was primarily composed of cinnamic aldehyde and a small amount of cinnamic acid, as shown by ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC). These findings suggest that COK leaf extract could potentially be used to treat hair loss.
