TLDR PRP is an effective and safe treatment for alopecia areata.
In a 2017 study conducted at Al-Azhar University Hospital, 30 patients with localized alopecia areata (AA), aged between 14 and 50 years, were treated with autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP). The study found that 60% of the patients responded to the treatment, with 88.9% of these responders showing good results and 11.1% showing partial results. Additionally, 53.3% of patients had complete hair regrowth, 6.6% had partial hair regrowth, and 40% showed no regrowth. The study also found a statistically significant improvement with increased hair densities in patches treated by PRP for 8 weeks and a significant decrease in the severity of the disease after treatment. There was a moderate positive correlation between change in response and age, but no significant difference was found between duration of disease. The study concluded that PRP is an effective and safe treatment for AA.
