TLDR Minoxidil may help prevent capsular opacification after cataract surgery.
The study investigated the effect of minoxidil on rabbit lens epithelial cell behavior in vitro and in situ. Minoxidil was found to potentially reduce capsular opacification after cataract surgery by reducing cell migration and proliferation. It did not harm rabbit lens epithelial cells up to a concentration of 3.0 mM, but it did decrease collagen production and inhibit cell proliferation. Minoxidil may have potential in preventing capsular opacification after cataract surgery. Further research is needed to develop effective delivery methods for using minoxidil as a treatment for posterior capsule opacification.
