TLDR Minoxidil with triamcinolone acetonide is more effective for mild alopecia areata when injected with microneedles than when applied topically.
The study involved 230 patients with alopecia areata (AA) and examined the effectiveness of minoxidil combined with triamcinolone acetonide delivered via microneedle injection. Patients were divided into two groups: a treatment group of 120 patients who received the drug combination via microneedle injection, and a control group of 110 patients who received the same drugs topically. After 12 weeks, the treatment group showed significantly better results, with a complete response rate of 78.33% and a total effective rate of 95%, compared to the control group's rates of 40.91% and 51.82% respectively. The treatment group also had lower Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) scores (1.8 ± 1.67) compared to the control group (2.45 ± 1.88). The study concluded that microneedle delivery of these drugs is more effective than topical use for patients with mild AA, with no significant increase in adverse reactions, although the total cost for the treatment group was significantly higher.
