TLDR Leonuri Herba alkaloids may help treat hormone-induced enlarged prostate in rats.
In a study from March 1, 2017, researchers investigated the effects of Leonuri Herba alkaloids (LHA) on prostate hyperplasia in aged rats. The study involved inducing prostate hyperplasia in rats through the removal of their testes and subsequent subcutaneous injections of testosterone and estradiol for 30 days. LHA was administered via gastric perfusion. Researchers conducted bladder fistula surgery on the rats and measured urine flow dynamics, serum E2 levels, and levels of prostate acid phosphatase (PACP), testosterone (T), and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). They also examined mRNA expression of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and used light microscopy to observe the prostate tissue. The results showed that LHA significantly reduced the prostate index, levels of DHT, T, and PACP, and increased E2 levels in the serum. Additionally, LHA decreased maximum voiding pressure, intercontraction interval, and bladder resting pressure. The conclusion was that LHA has a therapeutic effect on hormone-induced prostatic hyperplasia in rats.
