TLDR Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) may help hair growth by promoting dermal papilla cell proliferation.
The study investigated the effects and mechanisms of Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on the proliferation of dermal papilla cells (DPC), which are crucial for hair growth. Hair loss is characterized by the miniaturization of hair follicles and a reduction in anagen phase follicles, influenced by genetic and various environmental factors. Current FDA-approved treatments include finasteride and minoxidil, which promote hair growth through different mechanisms. Finasteride inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), while minoxidil prevents apoptosis of DPCs, promoting their proliferation. The study aimed to explore whether DHA could similarly enhance DPC proliferation, potentially offering a new therapeutic approach for hair loss.
