TLDR Chinese herb medicines can improve hair growth in mice.
In a study from 2005, researchers investigated the effects of Chinese herb medicines on hair growth in mice. They administered a mixture of extracts from Crataegus cuneata, Ligustrum lucidum, Grifola umbelata, Bletilla striata, and ginseng saponin extractum both intragastrically and topically to C57BL/6 mice. The results showed that the extract mixture significantly induced the onset of the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle, extended its duration, and increased the rate of hair growth when given intragastrically at concentrations of 10 g/L and 30 g/L, and topically at 40 g/L and 80 g/L. Additionally, ginseng saponin extractum applied topically at 3 g/L and 30 g/L also promoted the hair cycle. The study concluded that these Chinese herb medicines can enhance murine hair growth.

He Shou Wu (Fo Ti) extract was found to prolong the hair growth phase, inhibit 5-alpha-reductase (like finasteride), reduce androgen receptors, and increase growth factors, potentially outperforming minoxidil in recovering hair follicle size after DHT exposure. Two compounds, emodin and TSG, are identified as responsible for these effects and warrant further investigation.
