The Assessment of the Effect of Calcium, Magnesium, and Vitamin D Supplementation by the Hair Multielement Profile Follow-Up
October 2007
TLDR Calcium and magnesium levels in hair decrease after taking supplements, indicating early metabolic changes in perimenopausal women.
The study assessed the impact of calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D supplementation on perimenopausal women, focusing on hair multielement profiles. It was observed that more calcium and magnesium accumulated in the hair of these women before supplementation than after, a phenomenon referred to as the "calcium paradox." The changes in hair content of calcium and magnesium were identified as the earliest known indicators of metabolic changes related to skeletal mineralization in perimenopausal women.
