TLDR Beta-catenin boosts hair follicle cell growth by increasing c-myc expression.
The study investigated the role of beta-catenin in hair follicle cell proliferation by transfecting cells with an amino-terminal truncated beta-catenin gene. Successful transfection was confirmed by increased nuclear beta-catenin expression. Transfected cells showed a significant increase in clone forming efficiency, although large clone formation did not significantly increase. There was a slight increase in keratin 19 expression, while both c-Myc protein and mRNA levels increased significantly. These findings suggested that beta-catenin promoted hair follicle cell proliferation by enhancing c-myc gene expression.
