TLDR A man with HIV had hair loss due to syphilis, which improved after penicillin treatment.
The document described a case where a 30-year-old homosexual HIV-positive man experienced diffuse non-scarring alopecia, loss of eyelashes and eyebrows, skin rash, and oral lesions due to secondary syphilis. After testing positive for syphilis, he was successfully treated with a single dose of benzathine penicillin G. This treatment led to significant hair regrowth and the healing of syphilitic lesions within three months. The case highlighted the importance of considering syphilitic alopecia in the differential diagnosis of rapid hair loss and the necessity of offering HIV testing to all patients diagnosed with syphilis.
