TLDR Low vitamin D levels can cause hair loss and supplements may improve it.
In 2018, a case study was conducted on a 45-year-old female from northern Sudan who had been experiencing diffuse hair loss for 4 years. The woman's condition was static with no known relieving or aggravating factors. All medical investigations were within normal values except for her serum vitamin D level, which was significantly low at 9 (average value 30–300). The woman was prescribed a vitamin D supplement of 50,000 IU weekly for three months, followed by a daily maintenance dose of 1000 IU. After three months of supplementation, excellent results were achieved, with noticeable improvement starting from the first month. The study concluded that serum vitamin D level should be assessed in patients with hair loss, especially those at risk due to being indoors.
