Difficult-To-Treat Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy In A Young Woman

January 2008 in “ Elsevier eBooks
TLDR The young woman with epilepsy became seizure-free after finding the right combination of medications.
The chapter examined a case of a young woman with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) who experienced myoclonic seizures, absence seizures, and generalized tonic–clonic seizures. Her seizures began at age 18, but she was not diagnosed until age 22, when she was initially treated with valproic acid, which caused weight gain, hair loss, and epigastralgia. Despite good compliance, she continued to have seizures and was switched to levetiracetam, which also did not fully control her seizures. Finally, the addition of zonisamide and lamotrigine to her treatment regimen resulted in her becoming seizure-free, with all types of seizures disappearing.
