TLDR Patients and doctors often differ in assessing hair loss severity, so treatment should be personalized.
This study examined the differences in severity assessment and therapeutic goals for androgenetic alopecia (AGA) between patients and physicians in Japan. It involved 36 Japanese patients (29 men and 7 women) who had not received treatment for alopecia in the previous year. The study found that assessments of AGA severity were consistent between patients and physicians in 42% of cases. Physicians reported a higher severity than patients in 30% of cases, while patients reported a higher severity than physicians in 28% of cases. Despite these differences, statistical analysis showed no significant difference between the assessments. The study highlights the importance of treating AGA according to individual symptoms and patient wishes rather than a standardized protocol, as therapeutic goals varied among patients.
