TLDR Diabetes and necrotizing fasciitis together can be deadly.
This case report detailed a 56-year-old female with multiple risk factors, including diabetes mellitus, who developed necrotizing fasciitis, a severe infection with high mortality. Despite aggressive treatment, the patient's condition worsened, and she died 3 weeks after infection onset. The report highlighted the difficulty in diagnosing necrotizing fasciitis early, especially in immunosuppressed patients, and stressed the importance of early intervention. A study of 252 patients suggested glycemic variation as a potential predictive factor for complications. The report concluded that while diabetes is a risk factor, mortality rates for necrotizing fasciitis were high regardless of diabetes, but additional comorbidities increased death risk.
