TLDR Higher hormone levels may be linked to female hair loss.
The study investigated plasma levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) and total testosterone in 22 female patients with androgenetic alopecia compared to 20 normal females. While most individuals in both groups had hormone levels within the normal range, the mean values of DHEA-S and total testosterone were significantly higher in the alopecia patients than in the normal group (p<0.05). The study concluded that despite the wide range of normal hormone levels, there were significant differences in the mean values between the two groups, suggesting a potential link between elevated hormone levels and female androgenetic alopecia.
