TLDR The most common skin problems in perimenopausal women in South India are infections, eczemas, and acne, possibly worsened by external factors and lifestyle practices.
In 2015, a retrospective study was conducted on 500 perimenopausal women in South India, finding that the most common skin conditions were infections (22.4%), eczemas (14.6%), and acne (13.8%). Hair loss was also observed in 8.2% of the women. Another retrospective observational study from 2005 to 2012 analyzed 8,156 perimenopausal women aged 45-55 years, finding the most prevalent skin conditions to be eczematous disorders (23.6%), urticaria (12.4%), and papulosquamous disorders (10.7%). The studies concluded that these skin conditions, particularly eczema and urticaria, might be due to an exaggerated response to external factors in the perimenopausal population. The lack of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) treatment, routine sun exposure, and cultural practices were also noted as significant, but individual factors were not evaluated.
