TLDR Hirsutism and acanthosis nigricans are important for diagnosing PCOS; dermatologists play a key role in early detection and treatment.
The document reviewed the dermatological aspects of hyperandrogenism in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. It cited a study of 401 women with suspected PCOS, finding higher rates of hirsutism (53.3%), acne (61.2%), and acanthosis nigricans (36.9%) among those diagnosed with PCOS. Another study of 115 women with PCOS showed prevalence rates of acne, hirsutism, seborrhea, androgenic alopecia, and acanthosis nigricans to be 53%, 73.9%, 34.8%, 34.8%, and 5.2% respectively. The review concluded that hirsutism and acanthosis nigricans were key symptoms in diagnosing PCOS, while seborrhea and androgenic alopecia were not significant, emphasizing the important role of dermatologists in early diagnosis and treatment of PCOS.
