TLDR Skin changes can reveal serious hormone-related diseases, helping save lives.
This review highlights the field of dermatoendocrinology, emphasizing the skin's role as both an endocrine organ and a diagnostic tool for endocrine disorders. By examining 111 articles, the review discusses how skin inspections can reveal cutaneous manifestations of various endocrine diseases, some of which are life-threatening. Conditions such as androgenetic alopecia linked to insulin resistance, necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum associated with diabetes, and hyperpigmentation indicating primary adrenal insufficiency are among those discussed. The review underscores the importance of recognizing these skin signs for diagnosing serious endocrinopathies, potentially leading to life-saving interventions.
