Dermal Adipose Tissue Secretes HGF to Promote Human Hair Growth and Pigmentation

    Jiro Kishimoto, Yumiko Ishimatsu‐Tsuji
TLDR Fat tissue around hair follicles releases a growth factor that helps hair grow and develop color.
The study by Nicu C et al. demonstrated that dermal white adipose tissue (dWAT) surrounding hair follicles (HFs) plays a crucial role in regulating human hair growth and pigmentation through HGF/c-Met signaling. This finding suggested that targeting HGF/c-Met signaling in the perifollicular region could offer a novel therapeutic approach for treating disorders related to human hair growth and pigmentation.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
