TLDR People with hair loss conditions like Telogen Effluvium and Alopecia Areata often feel scalp pain and are more likely to have anxiety, but not necessarily depression.
In 2016, a study was conducted on 300 subjects, including 100 cases each of Telogen Effluvium, Alopecia Areata, and a control group, to assess the prevalence of Trichodynia (discomfort or pain of the scalp related to hair loss) and its association with anxiety and depression. The study found that Trichodynia was significantly more common in patients with Telogen Effluvium and Alopecia Areata compared to the control group, and was particularly higher in the Telogen Effluvium group. Anxiety was significantly higher in patients with Telogen Effluvium and Alopecia Areata who also had Trichodynia, compared to those without Trichodynia. However, there was no statistically significant difference found in terms of depression. The study concluded that Trichodynia is a common problem in patients with Telogen Effluvium and Alopecia Areata, and is frequently associated with anxiety.
