TLDR Higher levels of IL-1a and IL-1RA were found in severe alopecia areata cases.
This study investigated the association of Th1 and Th2 cytokines in patients with different severities of alopecia areata (AA), using sera from 20 patients, including 7 with patchy AA, 9 with alopecia totalis/universalis (AT/AU), and 4 controls. The results showed no significant difference in Th1 and Th2 cytokine profiles between patchy AA and AT/AU. However, higher levels of IL-1a and IL-1RA were observed in the AT/AU group. The study planned to analyze the remaining 288 patients to confirm these preliminary findings.
