TLDR Thyroid problems are linked to various skin issues, and checking thyroid health is important for people with certain skin conditions.
The study, conducted over nearly two years and involving 130 participants, found a significant association between thyroid dysfunction and various skin conditions. Hypothyroid patients commonly exhibited symptoms such as dry coarse skin, diffuse hair loss, and facial swelling, while hyperthyroid patients often had neck swelling, flushing, and pruritus. The research showed that skin disorders like chronic idiopathic urticaria, vitiligo, and alopecia areata were more prevalent in patients with thyroid disorders than in the control group, with a statistically significant association. The study concluded that thyroid hormones are crucial for skin health, and imbalances can lead to a range of cutaneous manifestations, suggesting that thyroid function assessment should be standard practice for patients with autoimmune diseases or specific skin conditions like chronic idiopathic urticaria, vitiligo, and alopecia areata.
