TLDR Some COVID-19 patients have skin issues, with men, ICU patients, and those on multiple antibiotics at higher death risk; in-person skin checks by dermatologists are more effective.
The study analyzed 2968 COVID-19 patients, with 1.71% showing COVID-19-related skin lesions. No link was found between mortality and skin lesion patterns. However, higher mortality was associated with male sex, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and the use of three or more antibiotics. The study also revealed that medical record reviews identified 10 times fewer skin manifestations than in-person evaluations by a dermatologist. The study concluded that risk factors for mortality in COVID-19 patients with skin manifestations were male sex, ICU stays, and the use of three or more antibiotics. It also emphasized the importance of in-person dermatologist evaluations for accurate diagnosis of COVID-19-related skin manifestations. The study did not find that including skin manifestation assessment improved the prediction of death risk. The study was limited by the small number of dermatoses found and its single-center nature.
