TLDR Certain skin rashes can indicate COVID-19 severity, with chilblains-like rashes linked to milder cases and livedoid patterns to more severe cases.
The systematic review analyzed 144 cases of cutaneous manifestations in COVID-19 patients, identifying common skin morphologies such as morbilliform, varicelliform, and urticarial. Chilblains-like eruptions were linked to milder COVID-19 symptoms, while livedoid and acro-ischemic morphologies were associated with severe disease. The study suggested that these skin manifestations, not typically linked to viral infections, were significant in understanding COVID-19 severity. The median age of patients was 51 years, and skin symptoms often appeared after other COVID-19 symptoms, with a mean latency of 9.1 days. The review underscored the role of dermatologists in identifying these manifestations and the potential involvement of androgens in disease severity.
