TLDR Hashimoto's thyroiditis can sometimes change to Graves' disease, so patients need careful monitoring.
This case report describes a rare conversion from Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) to Graves’ disease (GD) in a 23-year-old male. Initially diagnosed with HT due to symptoms like weight gain and hair loss, and treated with levothyroxine, the patient later developed hyperthyroid symptoms and was found to have multiple positive antibody titers, indicating GD. The diagnosis was confirmed with an I-123 thyroid uptake scan, and the patient was treated with methimazole and radio-active iodine ablation. The report highlights the potential for conversion between HT and GD due to their common autoimmune basis, emphasizing the need for close monitoring and early recognition in patients with autoimmune thyroid diseases.
