TLDR Selenium helps prevent thyroid issues and cognitive decline in the elderly, but balance is key.
Selenium (Se) is vital for immune function, antioxidant defense, and thyroid hormone metabolism, with optimal levels necessary to prevent autoimmune thyroid diseases and cognitive decline in the elderly. Se supplementation has been shown to reduce antithyroid antibody levels and may protect against cognitive dysfunction, although evidence is mixed and further research is required. Both deficiency and excess of Se can lead to health problems, and it is found in foods like nuts, seafood, and meats.
