TLDR Non-resorbable fillers cause more long-term issues than resorbable fillers.
The study compares complications from non-resorbable (permanent) and resorbable fillers at the Erasmus Medical Centre in the Netherlands. Between 2011 and 2016, 77.6% of complications were due to permanent fillers, but this decreased to 50.6% in 2022. The study included 316 patients in 2022, with 160 complications from non-resorbable fillers and 131 from hyaluronic acid fillers. Despite a ban on permanent fillers in the Netherlands since 2015, complications persist due to delayed onset and treatments abroad. Permanent fillers often cause long-term issues like inflammation and scarring, posing significant physical, psychological, and financial burdens. More studies are needed to better understand these complications and inform both patients and healthcare providers.
