TLDR Using a special laser and platelet-rich plasma together is safe and improves hair growth in men with hair loss.
Five years ago, a pilot study was conducted on nine men with male androgenetic alopecia (AGA) to investigate the efficacy and safety of combining a non-ablative fractional laser and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for treatment. The participants, aged between 32 and 55, underwent three sessions of 1,927 nm Thulium-doped fiber laser treatment followed by PRP injections at 1-month intervals. Six months after the last treatment, the terminal hair density had significantly increased by 28.1% (from 99.1 to 127 hairs/cm2), total hair density by 9.7% (from 149.7 to 164.2 hairs/cm2), and the hair mass index by 26.4% (from 16 to 20.2). Global photography showed improvement in almost all patients. The treatment was well-tolerated, with transient erythema and a mild burning sensation as the only adverse effects. The study concluded that the combination of a 1,927 nm fractional Thulium-doped fiber laser and PRP is safe and effective for treating male AGA, but suggested larger sample sizes and longer follow-up durations for future studies.
