TLDR Ziziphus jujuba and Eclipta alba leaf extracts improve blood sugar levels and cognitive function in diabetic rats.
This study investigates the cognitive benefits of ethanol leaf extracts from Ziziphus jujuba (ZJ) and Eclipta alba (EA) in diabetic Wistar rats (n=6 per group). Diabetes was induced using alloxan, and the rats were treated with either glibenclamide or varying doses of ZJ and EA extracts for seven and 21 days. Significant reductions in blood glucose levels were observed, especially after 21 days. Cognitive function, assessed via the Morris water maze test, showed marked improvement in the ZJ and EA groups, with reduced latency in finding the submerged platform, indicating enhanced learning and memory (p<0.01). The study highlights the hypoglycemic and cognitive-enhancing potential of ZJ and EA extracts, suggesting their use in managing neurocognitive disorders associated with diabetes.
