TLDR Cyclic nucleotide-gated channels are crucial for proper root hair growth and calcium balance in plants.
The study demonstrated that cyclic nucleotide-gated channels (CNGCs) CNGC6, CNGC9, and CNGC14 were essential for maintaining calcium oscillations and proper root hair development in Arabidopsis thaliana. Mutants lacking these channels exhibited disrupted calcium dynamics, leading to root hair defects such as bulging, branching, and bursting. The triple mutant cngc6/9/14 showed severe developmental issues, failing to form normal root hairs. CNGC9 was particularly crucial for stabilizing tip-focused calcium oscillations. The research highlighted the specific expression and plasma membrane localization of these CNGCs, underscoring their role in coordinating calcium signaling and ensuring root hair integrity and growth.
