TLDR The Korean study found that twenty-nail dystrophy mainly affects adults, more often women, and has five distinct types with different clinical progressions.
The retrospective study from Korea, which included 88 patients with twenty-nail dystrophy (TND), aimed to categorize the condition into subtypes and explore demographic and clinical characteristics. The study, conducted between February 1, 2003, and April 30, 2010, identified five morphological subtypes of TND: atrophic, hypertrophic, pitting-dominant, shallow fissure-dominant, and deep fissure-dominant. Key findings included a mean age of onset at 34.5 years, with a significant age difference between males (27.7 years) and females (38.6 years). There was a male predominance in child-adolescent-onset TND (65%) and a female predominance in adult-onset TND (70.6%). The pitting-dominant type had a significantly shorter disease duration compared to the shallow and deep fissure-dominant types. Comorbidities such as thyroid disease and alopecia areata were present in 11 patients. The study concluded that TND primarily affects adults, with a higher incidence in females, and that the different morphological subtypes follow distinct clinical courses.
